Spirit Week for Autism Acceptance Month

Autism Acceptance Month is an annual observance that takes place in April to raise awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and to promote acceptance and understanding of people with autism.

We are excited to celebrate the unique talents and abilities of people with autism, and to advocate for their inclusion and acceptance in society! This month is also a time to acknowledge the challenges that people with autism and their families may face, and to work towards a better understanding of their needs and experiences.

We kicked off Autism Acceptance Month with a spirit week! Check out some of the unique outfits from our staff and families! You can find the full recap on Instagram or Facebook

Join Our Free Informational Session

Has your child recently received a diagnosis of ASD? We understand receiving a diagnosis can be scary and overwhelming. As part of Autism Acceptance Month, we will be hosting a free, virtual information session with our director, Kristen Colyer, BCBA. The session will teach parents and caregivers how to navigate the process of obtaining services for their children, ages 1-8, who were recently diagnosed with ASD. We’ll explain the different therapies and resources available, as well as answer questions.

The Infinity Symbol = Inclusivity

In the past few years, the puzzle piece has been utilized significantly less to represent the Autism Community.

Members of the Autism Community thought the puzzle piece represented negativity about autism instead of offering a positive perspective. Those who spoke out expressed they felt, “it created the impression that autism was a riddle to be solved or that those with the condition were incomplete.” The community’s criticism of the symbol initiated the process of updating it.

The puzzle piece has since been replaced with a rainbow-colored infinity symbol. The infinity symbol represents the idea that autism is a vast and complex spectrum that includes individuals with a wide range of strengths and challenges. It acknowledges that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to understanding or supporting people with autism. Instead, it emphasizes the need for individualized and person-centered approaches to support people with autism in their unique strengths and challenges.

We are proud that our centers are named after a symbol that truly and inclusively represents the Autism Community!

Each individual who has received a diagnosis of ASD can be diagnosed further based on the severity of their symptoms, and how much support they may need on a daily basis.

Behaviors and symptoms may vary based on several different factors. If you would like more information on our assessments and individualized treatment plans for children, ages 1-8, contact us at 443-300-6362 or info@infinitycenteraba.org.
